They are a key member of the pharmacy team whether working in hospitals or community settings. In smaller community-based teams, the Pharmacy Technician supports the Pharmacist by sharing the burden of some of the basic clinical tasks. With further training, the technician can take on more responsibility such as checking and providing patient advice.
As a Pharmacy Technician you will:
- take in and hand out prescriptions
- receive and ordering stock
- offer people advice on how to best manage their medicines
- dispense medicines to people, either on prescription or ‘over the counter’
- provide information on potential side-effects of medicines
- give face-to-face or over the phone advice about health, lifestyle and medicines
- undertake final checks on prescriptions
- supervise other pharmacy staff, including Pharmacy Assistants and Dispensary Assistants
- refer patients on to the pharmacist
