Healthcare Science Assistant in Audiology (Band 2) and Healthcare Science Senior Assistant in Audiology (Band 3)

A Healthcare Science Assistant or Senior Assistant in Audiology provides support to the wider Audiology Team and provides direct care to patients who have a hearing loss. They support patients with their hearing aid management, including hearing aid repairs and maintenance. Other aspects of the role include administrative tasks such as monitoring stock levels and earmould processing.

Depending on the department requirements, responsibilities might include: 

  • Preparation of clinic rooms and daily calibration of equipment, cleaning and disinfecting any reusable items of equipment. 
  • Performing routine hearing aid repairs and servicing. These appointments may be either face to face or by post. 
  • Replacing faulty hearing aids by re-programming replacement digital hearing aids to previous settings using computer.  
  • Keeping up to date patient records. 
  • Earmould processing and modifications using drilling and/or grinding equipment. 
  • Providing advice to patients including hearing aid control use, insertion and assistive devices that might be beneficial.  
  • Examination of the outer ear by Otoscopy, advising patients of any impacted wax or other abnormalities. 
  • Providing advice and onward referral to senior staff as and when required. 
  • Stock monitoring and other administrative tasks.
  • Good verbal communication skills are essential, along with good organisational skills. Must be able to appropriately prioritise a given workload. 
  • Good at problem solving. 
  • As the role includes record keeping and use of patient management systems, good keyboard skills are essential. 
  • Ability to work as part of a team but also use own initiative.  
  • Caring nature.  

Band 2 £20,669 to £21,318 per year pro rata 

Band 3 £21,730 to £23,177 per year pro rata 

Usually Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm (Occasional weekend work depending on the requirements of the department). 

NHS 

No specific experience required if starting on an apprenticeship route but previous experience working in the NHS or other caring role would be an advantage. 

This is a patient facing role which requires good problem-solving ability. The work is very varied within a limited scope of practice. Healthcare Science Assistant or Senior Assistants in Audiology often work without direct supervision but have access to senior staff if required. 

They follow departmental policies and procedures to maintain departmental standards.  

Career Progression

Progression to a Band 4 role may be achieved following successful completion of appropriate qualification such as a higher-level apprenticeship or foundation degree.

You will need:

  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above, or equivalent.  
  • Programmes will also require enhanced DBS disclosure and checks.
