You will need a degree – BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent, HCPC professional registration.
Typical offer is 120 UCAS Tariff points, from a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications which may include: A Levels, T Levels, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate. Level 3 qualifications must include Chemistry or Biology.
We also require three passes at GCSE grade C or above, which must include Mathematics and English Language, or a minimum of Level 2 Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above.
Northumbria University and the University of Sunderland offer degrees that are accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Studying at the University of Sunderland will give the opportunity to apply during Stage 1 for a Practitioner Training Programme(PTP) placement and in Stage 2 for a Sandwich Year placement, both placements will take place in an accredited NHS laboratory where you will complete your IBMS Portfolio, resulting in you being eligible to apply for HCPC registration on graduation. The sandwich year placement is also offered by Northumbria University. Teesside University offer an accredited degree, but don’t give the opportunity to attend a PTP or Sandwich Year placement. Newcastle University also offers a Biomedical Science degree, but it is not an accredited programme. Following an undergraduate programme you could then apply for a place on the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) then progressing onto Higher Specialist Science Training (HSST).
